How to Choose Your Theoretical Orientation

In psychotherapy, choosing a theoretical orientation is a paradoxical event. It compresses your conceptualization but expands the effectiveness of your interventions. It builds walls between other orientations but it brings you closer to a community of like-minded people. Ultimately, it narrows your scope but what is left is highly focused. Given the high costs and high rewards, it is not a task that should be taken lightly.

World Mental Health Day 2017: Workplace Mental Health

World Mental Health Day is recognized on October 10 of every year. The day is used as an opportunity to discuss mental health and what can be done to make mental health care possible for people worldwide. Originally founded in 1992, World Mental Health Day will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year. Starting in 1994, Mental Health Day began assigning a new theme every year.  This year’s theme is mental health in the workplace.

Working Together on Self-Care: School Counselors and Teachers

During their graduate program, school counselors are often taught about self-care as a counselor and the prevention of burnout. When working with students, these same concepts can be applied to teachers. One of the roles that school counselors play in education is that of collaborator. Without teamwork within the school, students may not receive the resources that they need to succeed. Naturally, school counselors can help teachers address their burnout and assist in ways such as reducing teacher-student relationship stress, improving communication with families, and help students in conflict when it's affecting their classroom learning.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Month

Since 2014, the month of June has been dedicated to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder awareness. Specifically, in 2010 the U.S. Congress has named June 27th of every year thereafter as PTSD Awareness Day. After experiencing a traumatic event, some men, women, and/or children develop stressful reactions to memories, thoughts, and/or feelings that are associated with their experience.
