The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is recognized by the Council of HIgher Education Accreditation as the sole accrediting agency for social work education in the U.S. CSWE-accredited online programs meet high standards and educate students on the competencies necessary to succeed in the social work profession.

Online MSW concentrations

The online MSW program and concentration you choose will depend heavily on your career goals. Social workers may prefer to focus on a specific area within the field, ranging from macro-level work such as policy or management, to micro-level concentrations like counseling or gerontology.

Other MSW concentrations include:

  • Social work administration
  • Community organization
  • Education social work
  • Healthcare social work
  • Mental health and substance abuse
  • Child and family welfare
  • Hospice and palliative care
  • Military social work

Online MSW programs by track

Once you have an idea of the type of social work you want to perform, you can research online MSW programs that meet your criteria. For instance, programs with a clinical focus may cover skills needed to provide psychotherapy, make diagnoses, and treat individuals and small groups. Mental health-focused programs may prepare you to engage directly with clients on ways to improve their mental health and wellbeing. You may also want to research the requirements for becoming a licensed social worker in your state.

Below is a table that includes all CSWE-accredited online MSW programs, their test requirements, and available enrollment types.

This program list was updated April 2022. The school’s website is always best for the most up to date information.

Social work program accreditation and social work licensure

Attending an accredited social work program ensures that you receive an education that meets — and may even exceed —industry standards. Further, employers may require that social workers hold a degree from an accredited program in addition to meeting state licensure requirements.

To become a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), you may need to be a graduate of a CSWE-accredited MSW degree program, receive a minimum score on your state’s licensure examination, and meet a minimum number of hours of professional experience.

LMSW vs. LCSW

Earning your MSW opens up opportunities to become a licensed social worker — but what type of licensure should you pursue? Here is a quick breakdown and comparison of the licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and licensed master social worker (LMSW) credentials.

  • LMSWs have a more generalist scope of practice, while LCSWs tend to specialize in more focused clinical work.
  • Both an LCSW and LMSW require applicants to pass a licensing exam, but an LCSW must also fulfill post-graduate clinical supervision requirements before becoming licensed.
  • LMSWs usually work under the supervision of a licensed clinical professional, whereas LCSWs can work independently to conduct assessments, develop treatment plans, and diagnose mental health disorders.

Considerations for finding the best MSW program for you

Selecting the right online MSW program means considering factors such as potential career paths, delivery formats, options for specialization, and tuition costs. By understanding the options available, you can make an informed decision and start your educational journey.

Online MSW vs. on-campus MSW

If you’re new to online education, you may be wondering how it compares with on-campus learning. Whether you’re a working professional in need of flexibility or are experiencing circumstances that prevent you from enrolling in in-person classes, an online MSW program may be the right fit for you. Online programs are often structured similarly to in-person programs, including admission requirements, curricula, and student support services. Plus, they come with the added benefit of allowing you to learn from anywhere.

MSW, MSSW, and MSSA

There are three degree designations available to individuals pursuing a master’s in social work:

  • MSW (Master of Social Work)
  • MSSW (Master of Science in Social Work)
  • MSSA (Master of Science in Social Administration)

While they are similar in course content and outcomes, understanding their differences can help you make a more informed decision regarding your education without compromising your needs. The CWSE recognizes and accredits programs that meet their educational standards across all three of these designations.

Structure and length of online MSW programs

Not all online MSW programs are the same. They can vary in length, format, and structure, as well as curriculum and course content. Learn about how these factors suit your needs and lifestyle to set yourself on a path for a potentially fulfilling career.

Full-time vs. part-time programs

How much time can you commit to your classes? Learners who work full time or have other obligations may find that a part-time MSW program fits into their schedule. That being said, flexible coursework can result in a longer timeline — around two to four years in duration. On the other hand, a full-time program can be completed in as little as two years. This is a great option for students who can focus a large portion of their time and attention on their studies.

Regardless of whether you choose a part-time or full-time online MSW program, you will have to participate in hands-on field work at some point during your education.

Traditional vs. advanced standing

Advanced standing online MSW programs are designed for students who already hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE-accredited program. Admission requirements may be stricter and differ from traditional programs, however both formats require students to complete clinical field work, which may include internships.

Cohort models vs. flexible scheduling

In a cohort instruction model, students enter a program as a group and take a predetermined schedule of classes that fulfill program requirements. Alternatively, a flexible scheduling model allows students to self-select their classes. Consider your personal preferences and circumstances to determine the model that’s best for you.

Synchronous vs. asynchronous

Synchronous learning requires that students attend classes in real time on a predetermined schedule. Meeting frequency can vary by program, and students may be penalized for absences or missed assignments. In an asynchronous program, students can watch lectures, complete assignments, and catch up on class material on their own schedule. They may also have opportunities to interact with teachers and classmates in real time. Some programs combine synchronous and asynchronous instruction to provide a varied learning experience.

Admission requirements

Online MSW criteria will vary depending on the institution and program. Applicants may be required to:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Meet minimum GPA requirements.
  • Complete specific prerequisite classes.
  • Submit an official undergraduate academic transcript.
  • Submit a personal statement and letters of recommendation.
  • Pay the required application fee.

MSW GRE requirements

Some online MSW programs require minimum GRE scores from applicants who do not meet the GPA requirements, and others may require GRE scores regardless of GPA. Research the programs you’re interested in to understand the full criteria.

MSW GPA requirements

Minimum GPA scores for online MSW programs can vary depending on the university. Applicants who do not meet the GPA requirements may be asked to submit alternative criteria, such as a GRE score.

Coursework

While course specifics will depend on the institution, program, and concentration, MSW programs can include the following:

  • Foundational courses: These classes cover topics like human behavior, social systems, and the ethics and theories of social work. They instill core research skills students will use throughout their program.
  • Concentration courses: These classes allow students to dive deeper into their topic of focus. The program tables above can give you an idea of the concentrations that may be available to you.
  • Fieldwork or internship: This supervised experience gives students the opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations. You can learn more about fieldwork and internships below.

Tuition, financial aid, and scholarships

If you’re seeking financial assistance or scholarship opportunities to fund your online MSW education, you can contact the program’s financial aid or graduate studies. Your eligibility will depend on the program and funding criteria.

Applicants can also pursue general student funding opportunities such as scholarships, contests, awards, fellowships, and grants available through the CWSE. Your local chapter of the National Association of Social Workers may also provide additional funding opportunities.

Is an online MSW right for you?

Earning an MSW is one way for aspiring and practicing social workers to add to their expertise and qualify for licensure. Learning online gives you the flexibility to attend classes from anywhere while enjoying a comparable experience to an in-person MSW program.

With your master’s in social work, you may be able to pursue advanced career opportunities in clinical, specialty, and supervisory practice. You may be eligible for a wider range of roles, which can also help you reach a greater earning potential.

Career options

An MSW allows you to pursue a wide range of social work career paths, including:

  • Child and family social worker
  • Community social worker
  • Licensed clinical social worker
  • Medical and public health social worker
  • Mental health and substance abuse social worker
  • Military social worker
  • School social worker

Each role comes with its own qualifications, which may be similar to other related professions. For instance, school counselors and school social workers may overlap in certain areas of their work, but have different educational backgrounds. Make sure to check on additional licensure requirements associated with the roles you’re applying for to ensure that you meet all criteria.

Social workers’ salary and job outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), social workers earned a median salary of $55,530 in 2022. The BLS also reported that social worker employment is projected to grow 7% from 2022 to 2032 — faster than the average for all occupations.

As the population continues to age, evolve, and grow, the demand for healthcare and social services has the potential to increase and lead to more and more opportunities for social workers with their MSW.

Other social work degrees

Not ready to pursue your MSW? Consider a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW). Interested in furthering your education after grad school? The Doctor of Social Work (DSW) is the highest degree you can earn in the field.

Bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW)

A bachelor’s degree in social work provides aspiring social workers with foundational knowledge to pursue various career paths in the field. During the latter part of a BSW program, students may take more specialized courses to become familiar with social work’s core ethics, theories, and strategies. Individuals with their BSW can also qualify for advanced standing MSW programs.

Doctoral social work programs (DSW & Ph.D.)

For social work professionals interested in advanced training in a specific area of practice, a DSW program can prepare them to take on new roles. A doctor of social work program may require students to participate in a residency or complete a dissertation that demonstrates their skills. Alternatively, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in social work focuses less on clinical work and more on conducting research in an academic setting.

Online MSW FAQ

Can you get an MSW without a BSW?

Yes, it is possible to earn your MSW without a BSW. Many CSWE-accredited online MSW programs accept applicants with bachelor’s degrees in related topics. MSW applicants who do hold a BSW can be eligible for advanced standing programs, which are designed for students with foundational social work knowledge.

How long does it take to complete an MSW?

The time it takes to earn your MSW will depend on the program and format. For instance, a part-time program will take longer to complete than a full-time program, and an advanced standing option may be faster than a traditional track.

Are there any one-year online MSW programs?

Accelerated online MSW programs may be completed in as little as one year. Because of their shorter timeline, these advanced standing programs may only be offered full time to students with a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program.

What can you do with a master’s in social work?

After receiving your MSW and completing relevant licensing requirements, you can pursue a variety of different career paths in the social work field. You may become a child and family social worker, licensed clinical social worker, school social worker, healthcare social worker, or another position. Professionals with their MSW can also further their education by applying to a doctoral program.
