How to Become a Counselor in Nevada

As in many other states, counselors in Nevada are known as Clinical Professional Counselors (CPCs). Counselors still in the supervision stage of licensure are known as CPC Interns. The state’s premier professional organization for CPCs is the Nevada Counseling Association, a branch of the American Counseling Association whose mission is to “enhance the quality of life by promoting the development of professional counselors.” Licensure for CPCs in Nevada is managed by the state Board of Examiners for Marriage and Family Therapists and Clinical Professional Counselors.

Licensure requirements for counselors in Nevada, including those related to education, supervision, examination, fees, and renewal, are examined in greater detail below, along with salary information from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and scholarships and loan repayment programs available to aspiring CPCs in the state.

Supervision Hours

“Supervision” is shorthand for post-graduate, directed experience in professional counseling under supervision in a work setting. However, Nevada titles post-graduate clinical counseling experience as an “internship”. Nevada requires aspiring CPCs to complete contact hours. Of these hours, at least 1,500 must be spent in direct client contact, and at least 300 must be spent in supervision with approved supervisors, with at least 1 hour completed each week in which the applicant provided counseling.

Examination

Clinical professional counselor licensure in Nevada requires a passing score on the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE), which assesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed important for providing effective counseling services. Nevada’s board states that CPC interns may sit for the exam after the intern license is issued and before the end of the internship.

To renew a license to practice as a Marriage and Family Therapist or Clinical Professional Counselor, a minimum of 6 hours of instruction related to cultural competency and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Continuing Education

Nevada CPCs must complete continuing education during each two-year licensing period. For licenses issued before January 1, 2026, or between January 1, 2026, and June 30, 2026, the board currently requires a total of 40 hours, including 6 hours in ethics, 4 hours in suicide prevention, and 6 hours in cultural competency; no more than 20 hours may be non-interactive. Each hour taught may count as two hours of CE, subject to board limits

Nevada counselors can use up to 20 of their 40 continuing education hours through asynchronous distance education. The other 20 hours must be completed through live seminars or webinars that allow interaction with the presenter or other participants.
