A doctorate in counseling is a significant academic and professional commitment, but program length and requirements vary by degree type and institution. Doctoral programs in counselor education and supervision build on prior graduate-level counseling preparation and include advanced study in counseling, supervision, teaching, research and scholarship, and leadership and advocacy.
Under current CACREP doctoral standards, programs review each student’s prior counseling coursework during admission and may require additional foundational coursework if prior preparation does not meet entry-level counseling standards. Doctoral students also complete supervised professional experiences and a dissertation or capstone project.
Credit requirements vary by program. CACREP requires at least 48 semester hours of doctoral-level study beyond the entry-level degree, increasing to at least 60 semester hours for students entering on or after July 1, 2026. A student’s total time to completion will depend on the program’s curriculum, prior graduate preparation, research requirements, and pace of study.

When comparing doctoral counseling programs, consider how the degree’s curriculum and professional focus align with your career goals. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredits doctoral programs in Counselor Education and Supervision (CES).
Under CACREP’s current standards, doctoral programs in counselor education and supervision prepare students in five core areas: counseling, supervision, teaching, research and scholarship, and leadership and advocacy. These programs are designed to prepare graduates for advanced roles that may include counselor education, clinical supervision, research, professional leadership and counseling practice.
Doctoral training also includes supervised professional experiences. Depending on the program and internship placement, students may gain experience supervising counselors or counselors-in-training, teaching counseling courses, conducting research or participating in leadership and advocacy activities.
Programs may also provide opportunities for students to develop expertise in particular counseling populations, practice settings or research topics through electives, supervised experiences and dissertation or other scholarly work. When comparing programs, review the curriculum, faculty research interests, internship opportunities, accreditation status and how well the program supports your intended area of specialization.
If you are seeking a PhD strictly to enhance your professional counseling career and don’t plan to teach or conduct research, you may want to consider universities that offer a comparable program in mental health counseling or counseling psychology.
Begin your program search by speaking with your advisors and/or colleagues. Then explore the options accredited and recognized by CACREP and the American Psychological Association. Most of the highest-ranked private and public universities offer on-campus counseling PhD programs. CACREP also recognizes online options, but because of the immersive nature of a doctorate program, these are typically hybrid programs, not fully online.
