How to Become a Counselor in Wyoming

As in many other states, Wyoming uses a two-step licensure path for professional counselors: provisional professional counselor (PPC) for applicants who still need to pass the required examination and/or complete supervised post-degree experience, and licensed professional counselor (LPC) for independent licensure.
The state’s premier professional organization for LPCs is the Wyoming Counseling Association, a branch of the American Counseling Association. The Wyoming branch was founded in 1954 as the Wyoming Personnel and Guidance Association. Its mission today is “the enhancement of human development throughout the lifespan and the promotion of the counseling profession.
Licensure for LPCs in Wyoming is managed by the state’s Mental Health Professions Licensing Board. Licensure requirements for counselors in Wyoming, including education, supervision, examination, fees, renewal, and licensure by reciprocity, are examined in detail below, along with salary information from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and selected funding resources relevant to counseling students or licensed counselors in Wyoming.

LPC licensure in Wyoming requires the completion of a master’s or doctoral degree in counseling from a program accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) or the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE).
Programs that are not CACREP-accredited may still be considered if the institution and coursework meet Wyoming Board requirements.
Appropriate degree programs will be 60 semester hours of graduate-level coursework, with instruction in each of the following core content areas:
- Human growth and development
- Social and cultural diversity
- Helping relationships
- Group work
- Career development
- Assessment
- Research and program evaluation
- Professional orientation and ethical practice
- Practicum
- Internship
Internship Requirements
In addition to the coursework listed above, LPC licensure in Wyoming requires the completion of an internship, practicum, or field experience under clinical supervision. Practicum experience must equate to at least 100 clock hours over a 10-week academic term. The supervised internship must include 600 clock hours begun after completion of a practicum. Wyoming also requires that at least 240 clock hours of direct service, including experience leading groups, be achieved. Lastly, weekly interactions should average 1 hour of individual or triadic supervision and 1.5 hours of group supervision with a program faculty member. Postgraduate supervision is also necessary for licensure.
Candidates should always confirm the most current internship requirements directly with the state board.
Supervision Hours
“Supervision” is shorthand for directed, postgraduate experience in professional counseling under supervision in a work setting. LPC licensure in Wyoming requires 3,000 hours of supervision for all applicants. These hours must be completed within 18 to 36 months, unless an extension is granted by the Board. At least 1,200 hours of direct client contact and 100 hours of face-to-face, individual direction from an approved supervisor will be included in the total requirement.
Confirm supervision requirements with your program, site, and the Wyoming Mental Health Professions Licensing Board before beginning your placement so your hours will count under Wyoming rules.
Examinations
Licensure as a professional counselor in Wyoming requires a passing score on the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE), the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE), the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) examination, or another examination approved by the Board.
National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE)
The NCE is a 200-question, multiple-choice exam administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors. It assesses knowledge, skills, and abilities in effective counseling services.
National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Exam (NCMHCE)
The NCMHCE is administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors and uses clinical case studies to assess an entry-level clinical mental health counselor’s ability to identify, analyze, diagnose, and develop treatment plans.
Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) Exam
The CRC exam gives candidates 210 minutes of testing time, but they should plan for about four hours total to allow for check-in, the tutorial, and a short survey. It has 175 multiple-choice questions split into two locked sections, Rehabilitation and Disability, and Counseling, with 150 scored questions and 25 unscored field-test items.
LPC Licensure Fees
LPCs in Wyoming can expect to pay the following fees for their license application and renewal:
- LPC License Application: $393
- Provisional Professional Counselor License (PPC): $193
- Licensure by Reciprocity: $393
Renewal Fees vary depending on the mental health licensure and initial licensure situation. Additional fees for fingerprinting and background checks are also required for most applicants.
LPC License Renewal
LPC licenses in Wyoming expire every two years on the licensee’s birthday. Renewal requires payment of the appropriate fee and completion of continuing education, and the Board states that fingerprints are required every 4 years as part of renewal.
Continuing Education
For Wyoming LPCs, continuing education must be completed during each current renewal period, and licenses renew every two years on the licensee’s birthday. The board’s renewal materials state LPCs must complete 45 contact hours each renewal cycle, including at least 3 hours in professional ethics and 3 hours in suicide assessment or intervention.
Wyoming allows CE through college courses, continuing education classes, online courses, qualifying presentations, and attendance at board meetings. Presentation credit is capped at 6 hours per renewal period, and board-meeting attendance is capped at 3 hours. Applicants and current license holders should confirm any lists of pre-approved course providers and the most up-to-date CE requirements with the Wyoming board.
Additional Information
For Counselors Licensed in Other States
The Wyoming Mental Health Professions Licensing Board offers an alternative route to licensure for counselors who have already obtained licensure in other U.S. states. This process is called “licensure by reciprocity.”
Applicants who directly meet Wyoming’s requirements and hold a similar license in another jurisdiction may be issued an LPC by reciprocity. Applicants who still need additional supervised experience may be issued a provisional professional counselor license.
Wyoming is in the process of joining the Counseling Compact; check the Wyoming board’s compact page and the Counseling Compact Commission website for the latest updates.
